Hyundai has triumphed at the 2022 Australian Good Design Awards with two successful models in the Product Design, Automotive and Transport category.

The benchmark-resetting Hyundai STARIA people mover has won a Good Design Award Gold accolade and the scorching, high-performance Hyundai i30 Sedan N is a Good Design Award Winner, in recognition of both models’ outstanding design and innovation.

A Special Accolade was also awarded to the striking, coupe-like i30 Sedan N as the 2022 Automotive Exterior Design Award Winner.

The prestigious Australian Good Design Awards are the highest honour for design and innovation in Australia and were announced today at a ceremony in Sydney.

Hyundai’s 2022 Good Design Awards triumph marks the sixth straight year of success for the company.

i30N Sedan

“We are thrilled to be recognised with prestigious Australian Good Design Awards for STARIA and i30 Sedan N in our sixth consecutive year of success at the awards,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Ted Lee said.

“Both models underline that not only is Hyundai at the leading edge of the development of advanced sustainable powertrain technologies, we are also pushing the boundaries in established segments such as people movers and high-performance vehicles,” he said.

The Good Design jurors heaped praise on STARIA, which resets the people mover benchmark through its futuristic styling, smart interior packaging, and passenger car-derived platform, which underpins excellent dynamics and ride comfort.

STARIA also impressed with its segment-first SmartSenseTM advanced active safety features and its array of convenience and comfort technologies designed to enhance the user experience.

The Good Design Awards Jury commented: “As one of the panel noted, it's hard to make a van sexy, but the Hyundai STARIA does an admirable job of design evolution in a genre that typically places function before form.

The STARIA’s exterior design cues manage to deceive the eye; a streamlined body bookended by a futuristic front fascia, a wraparound light strip, and large glass panelled rear again with feature vertical taillights.

The interior, however, is the true light-bringer. Eight occupants can sit and even recline comfortably within an expansive glasshouse, allowed by the modular interior which can be optioned with recliner or swivelling seating. A bold step for MPV/Van design, and a massive leap for Hyundai when compared to the iMax model it replaces.”

The judging panel celebrated the striking i30 Sedan N’s success as a fun-to-drive compact high-performance car that’s equally at home on a track as it is during daily driving.

i30 Sedan N continued to impress with its excellent safety credentials, which are achieved through state-of-the-art structural design and the application of advanced SmartSenseTM technologies.

i30 Sedan N’s styling, which brings depth of appeal beyond the model’s attainable price point, also earned it a Special Accolade as the overall 2022 Automotive Exterior Design Award Winner.

The Good Design Awards Jury commented: “Bristling with wings, vents and performance attitude, judges loved how the Hyundai i30N sedan wears its performance heart so boldly on its sleeve.

The compact high-performance sports sedan follows in the rubber laid down by the exhilarating i30 N hatch, which instantly established the Korean car maker as a serious player in a category long dominated by the likes of the VW Gold GTI. The design brief for the i30 Sedan N called for a style-focused, compact, high-performance four-door that gives customers more space and practicality than the hatch, without losing any of its focus on fun and racetrack-ready capability.

The striking coupe-like body sits on a longer wheelbase and boasts a generous boot, while the interior of the classy cabin features tactile leather and brushed aluminium finishes. Among its features, the i30N boasts Electronically Controlled Suspension with settings from comfort to racetrack. It also boasts a Track Maps feature, which alerts drivers when near a compatible racetrack and, with the track selected, lets them run an automatic lap timer.”

The 2022 Good Design Awards jury evaluated each design against a strict set of criteria, across an array of design disciplines and subcategories.

To earn recognition, Good Design Award entries had to demonstrate outstanding design and innovation under the banners of Good Design, Design Innovation and Design Impact.

Australia Good Design Awards

The Australian Good Design Awards is the country’s oldest and most prestigious international awards for design and innovation with a proud history dating back to 1958. Each year, the Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian and international market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design, and reward new and emerging areas of design including design strategy, social impact design, design research and up-and-coming design talent in the next-gen category.

The 2022 Good Design Awards attracted high-quality design projects from Australia and around the world. These innovative projects were evaluated by more than 70 Australian and international Jurors, including designers, engineers, architects and thought leaders. Each entry was evaluated according to a strict set of design evaluation criteria which includes Good Design, Design Innovation and Design Impact.

Projects recognised with an Australian Good Design Award demonstrate excellence in professional design and highlight the impact a design-led approach has on business success and social and environmental outcomes.
